Where the twelve signs come from
The zodiac is a 3,000-year-old Babylonian idea: the sun's yearly path divided into twelve slices, each named for a constellation. The signs and their date ranges shifted slightly over the millennia (the constellations themselves have drifted), but the "tropical" set used by Western horoscopes has been fixed since Ptolemy. It is storytelling, not astronomy — which is exactly why it makes a fun two-minute tool and a terrible life plan.
